A unique and deadly environment found in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s an underwater brine pool, approximately 100 feet in circumference and 12 feet deep, located nearly 3,300 feet below the surface.
The water is five times saltier than the surrounding seawater, making it extremely dense and unable to mix with the surrounding water. The brine pool is filled with dissolved methane, which creates a toxic environment. This “jacuzzi” is not a relaxing oasis, but rather a deadly trap for any living organisms that enter it. Crabs, amphipods, and occasional fish that venture in will certainly die.
The brine pool formed millions of years ago when the Gulf of Mexico was shallower and evaporated, leaving behind massive layers of salt. Over time, these salt layers became submerged and buried under sediment, creating a unique and toxic environment.
