The waters surrounding Madeira have long been a crossroads of maritime history. Recent research by marine archaeologist Alexandre Monteiro has revealed that Portugal’s territorial waters—spanning Madeira, the Azores, and the mainland—hold over 8,620 documented shipwrecks, with an estimated 250 containing significant treasures.
Monteiro’s database identifies 120 shipwrecks within Madeira’s territorial waters, many dating to the 16th century and later. Most are buried under layers of sediment, reducing the risk of looting but also hindering exploration. These shipwrecks remain undiscovered while technology catches up.
